Advertising is something that is becoming more and more common in our society. We can barely go an hour without seeing or hearing some sort of ad, whether watching television, listening to the radio or just going for a walk outside.
To me it seems like advertising preys on the stupid and subject-able, but every so often I'll find myself wanting something that I either don't need, or that I saw some sort of advertisement of it earlier. So how much are we really influenced by it? Do you really think your own tastes and opinions are actually formed by this exposure?

Definitely, but as insinuated by your post, I think that some would be more susceptible to advertising. There would be several possibilities as to why they would be.
1. They were born a little more malleable then others. Just as some are born more athletic then others, some will be born with a stronger sense of character that wouldn't be as easily affected by external influences.
2. Our nurturing (assuming a developed country) has led us to become nearly immune to advertisements, as it has simply become a part of us. But is it that we are "immune" or just so deeply affected that advertisements constantly shift us subconsciously?
3. Some advertising may simply be appealing to you instinctively. Ultimately, an advertisement offering pleasure and happiness isn't turned down by many; It is the developed ideology that the services offered could never live up to its promises which allows humans to reject advertisements.

I agree that some are more susceptible to advertising, which is probably a combination of factors such as personality and upbringing, as well as a large portion being cultural too.
I'd say that rather than peddling the actual product, advertising relies more on several subliminal effects and associations, for example lighter shades of blue are associated with happier feelings, as well as certain types of music and even fonts.
So I think advertising isn't really about the product at all, rather it's the companies trying to make us associate those subliminal cues with their product.

Possibly, but personally I don't give that much credit to subliminal messaging, but rather just relating our desires to the product subtly.
